Webinar Series - Engineers Talk: All you need to know about Engineering Studies

Webinars are like the talk of the town these days. Keeping in mind its exposure, Punjab Technical University decided to have webinars for students who wish to pursue B.Tech. It is quite difficult for a student to choose the right stream once they clear JEE Mains. In order to guide these students we planned the webinar series – Engineers Talk: All you need to know about Engineering Studies.

The first round of the webinar was conducted on the 14th of July. This session was monitored by Mr. Praveen Kumar, a technical education expert and IIT Delhi alumnus. Many lucky students who were part of this webinar got a chance to interact with Mr. Praveen Kumar and got their queries sorted. During the webinar, Mr. Praveen Kumar said “Aim for your top college but always have a backup in mind.” His words were truly enlightening for the all the students who participated in the webinar.

The second round was held on the 17th of July. And this time we had our very own celebrated and enthusiastic Vice Chancellor in our studio. It was a very special time for the entire Punjab Technical University family. For all who missed this opportunity, here’s a small sneak-peek from the webinar, “Colleges under the University Campus Program will be conducting classes in video mode utilizing live feed from the classrooms of IIT Chennai, Delhi, Lucknow and Bombay. Video classes have been introduced by us to provide the best lectures in the field of technical education to our students."

Due to constant requests from students and parent groups we decided to stretch this series and then came the third webinar. This time we had someone special from the leaders in the IT Industry. Yes, Mr. Vineet Agrawal, President of Wipro Enterprise was with us in our studio. And we had plenty of questions pouring from the participants. Mr. Vineet Agrawal very well answered everyone.  He added “I spent over Rs. 9 lakhs for sending my children on student exchange. It is amazing if UCP is providing opportunities to go for student exchange in Taiwan under Rs. 70,000.”

It was a pleasure hosting three webinars for students. We’re hoping all three webinars had a good impact on the participants. For all who missed these webinars, you need not worry. We will be soon back with more webinars. Till then Keep Calm and wait for more webinars.

PTU signs MoU with AIESEC

Jalandhar, July 21, 2014: In order to enhance and develop the overall personality of students, PTU signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with world’s largest student- run organization AIESEC for its Youth Global Internship Programme (YGIP). This is another major initiative taken by the university this year.

Briefing about the program YGIP Ms. Ritansha Bagaria, Vice- President Marketing AIESEC told, “This 6 week AIESEC program provides undergraduate students an opportunity to develop entrepreneurial and leadership skills through international internships centered around social issues. The objective is to target our country’s youth and help them enrich their education by offering them a holistic international experience. As an YGEP exchange participant, interns will work on a developmental project along with other participants from across the globe, take complete ownership in an unfamiliar environment, manage your own projects and track your results, exactly as an entrepreneur would.”

About the way forward with PTU Ms. Tiki Wen from AIESEC said, “This will be a great opportunity to bring forward the students from university under this programme. We want PTU to promote this programme. There is a proper selection process in which various rounds are involved. To begin with, we need minimum 300 students out of which we will select 50 of them for the final round who will further take up the internship course and could get a chance to go abroad and learn its culture as well as working style.”

Expressing his concern over signing MoU Dr. Rajneesh Arora, Vice-Chancellor said, “I am always in favor of such programmes where students could get an opportunity to explore themselves through such cultural exchange educational programs. Gone are the days when there were limited numbers of students in field of technical education. Now, the competition has become tough and for that bringing forward the quality students has become a dicey task. Now, it becomes the duty of further faculty members to pursue this program effectively and bring out their quality students to us for this programme, so that they can further represent themselves as Indians and products of PTU when stepping in other countries. I am looking forward for this positive response of this programme and assure the complete support to the AIESEC team as well as to the students who will be selected for YGIP.”

“University Campus” Program (UCP)

The Punjab Technical University and the Punjab Government have identified 30 of the top affiliated colleges of PTU as “University Campus” to provide high quality of education at an affordable cost. These affiliated colleges which have already been performing well academically have been taken under the supervision of PTU to further ensure academic excellence. The University Campus program will also work towards uniformly delivering high standards of education. The University Campuses have well developed infrastructure; state of the art technology; new and industry relevant course design and curriculum; highly trained professional faculty and most importantly, an affordable fee structure. The University Campuses are spread across various locations in the state of Punjab. Apart from having faculty from top IITs and NITs, efforts are being made for live streaming of lectures directly from IITs in some classes to ensure clear understanding of concepts.

Declining standards of education all across has resulted in students not acquiring the right skill for employment. This has resulted in genesis of the University Campus concept. The market today is swarming with numerous educational institutes. The student today is confused about the quality of education provided in any of the institutes making tall claims. Due to so much competition in the market between various colleges and universities for acquiring students, they completely ignore the core reason for existence of an educational entity that is to provide good education to the student to prepare them for a better future. The state of Punjab has created quality infrastructure of nearly 600-700 colleges in different parts of the state, the “University Campus” program being among the top, thereby showing ray of hope to numerous students for fulfilling their dreams. Punjab is committed to provide high quality of education and maintain that standard year after year.

The University Campuses will provide the best quality of education by infusing high delivery standards with highly knowledgeable faculty. The teaching module is designed in such a way that the students enrolled will be taught by the Professors of various IITs via a live streaming of the IIT classes for the respective course and subject. Currently the classes are being conducted for 12 subjects for Semester, Semester 3 and Semester 5, and the decision about continuation of this program and adding new subjects is likely to be taken in the next few days. Each class has an additional available teacher for further explanation and clearing of doubts on the respective subject. These teachers are highly qualified M.Techs from IITs/NITs itself and will be further trained by the Professors of IITs. The course curriculum and content is newly designed keeping in mind the current market requirements and industry relevance thus making the student more qualified and ready for the present job market . Make an Informed Choice: Target the Right Engineering College!!!

It is that time of the year when colleges are gearing up for the counseling sessions. Parents and students are equally confused about taking the right decision about which colleges to opt for. This article gives you a brief idea on how to handle the counseling process in a way that you end up with the right course and college.

Firstly the student needs to identify the course he or she is interested to pursue. This requires proper assessment of one’s abilities and aptitude towards the selected course. It is always advisable to keep your options open regarding the choice of the course. Once you have decided upon the course you want to opt for, the next step is to look for colleges that offer these courses. Shortlist these colleges based upon their location and performance till date. While making your choice, gather as much information you can from various sources and methods. If your situation permits, it may also be useful to visit the college/campus once, see the infrastructure and hostel facilities, talk to the teachers and students for more information. You can refer to the information available on college rankings which is based on academic performance, placements, faculty and infrastructure of the institute.

Many Universities and colleges collate their information and put it up on the internet. Also various other educational sites provide the ranking of various colleges and Universities according to their academic performance and placements. Further it is suggested that you consult your friends and seniors who are already into the field of engineering. However, it is to be noted that the seats in good colleges are very limited. Reservations in various categories also limit the seats available for the general category. Thus do not restrict yourself to just one or two colleges. Instead keep your options open. If you are applying for online counseling you have the added advantage of selecting all the colleges in order of your preference. In case you do not get the college of your choice in the first counseling there is always a scope of you making it in the next round of counseling. However make sure that your rank is good enough to get you a seat in the preferred college in the second round.

Talking about engineering it is difficult to ignore the large number of institutes that has come up in Punjab over the past few years. Punjab is fast becoming a destination of choice for higher education. There are approximately 102 Engineering colleges (Govt. and Private) affiliated to Punjab Technical University which provides excellent facilities to the students of Punjab as well as from other states.

Don’t let Failures Break You, Allow Them to Make You

There is no success without failures and challenges. Failures motivate you to take up a challenge; they motivate your desire to be victorious. Don’t run from them, don’t get defeated by them, rather, face them and defeat them.

Often it has been seen that students find it quite an uphill task to deal with failure. One re-exam and all their confidence vanishes. Dear, giving up all hopes had never been a solution, but trying has always been. Recall your childhood memories, how many times did you fall before finally walking or even standing? Did you quit trying, we guess the answer is no. Then what is hindering you now?

At PTU, we believe that no student should ever allow failure to be his or her stopping stone. We try our best in turning failure as stepping stones for the brighter future. For the same, we are sharing some words that can enlighten your inner consciousness:

It is the fear of failure that bothers you the most
In this success-driven society, it is the fear of failure that hinders most of the students. The fear that ‘if I will fail the society will make fun of me; my friends will not talk to me; my parents would be ashamed of me’ and so on keeps on haunting for long. Until and unless you don’t get rid of these fears, you can’t get rid of the fear of failure. Always remember, it is not the society that makes you, it is you who makes the society. If you turn successful, it is you in the first place who will be happy, and if you lose, it is you in the first place again who will be sad. Then where did this society come from.

Wish to beat it then face it and accept it
I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work.
                                                                                                - Thomas A. Edison

The man, who is till date regarded as a genius inventor by the world, failed 10,000 times but didn’t give up. So, to err is human, there is nothing wrong in it. However, it’s wrong if you run away from your mistakes.
Admit it that you failed and try to find out the reason behind it. It is the only way to success. Edison said it so loud and clear, he found 10,000 ways that didn’t work and then in his 10,001th attempt he removed all those wrong ways, as simple as that.

The last note

PTU hopes that by now you would have understood that failure is not the end of life; it’s just another chance to give a fresh start. Be it an academic exam or a life changing moment, if you failed once that doesn’t mean you have lost it; it only means that you have been given the golden chance to try it again in a better way. Wish you all the best.

Run After Your Ambition and Success Will Follow

As soon as you are done with your schooling, every other person around you (be it a milkman or your maternal aunt) starts asking you about your future plans. Some of the very common questions that perhaps are repeatedly asked are like - so thereafter what will you do with your life, what are your plans for the future and so on. There is no second thought to the fact that at times these questions really put you off. In such situations, just give a polite answer to everyone, “Don’t you worry, I will make myself useful”. On this note, the questions from the outsiders might stop, but now the same questions will hover over your mind. However not to worry, as finding the answers are as easy as a pie. All you need is to know your ambition, work on it and leave the rest on time.

Run After Your Ambition and Success Will Follow - It has been more than a decade now that Punjab Technical University is giving a way to students and budding professionals for pursuing their ambition. We understand that success can only be achieved when you do something not just with your mind, but also with your heart. The career option that satisfies both your mind and heart is the right choice for you. However, if you are confused while selecting the right career option for yourself, allow us to clear your clouds of confusion.

Know what interests you the most - Every student has a different area of interest. Someone finds fun in solving the complicated algebras, and a few others enjoy sketching their imaginations on the canvas. You need to figure out what interests you the most.

Don’t ever feel that your dream is smaller than that of others - A dream is a dream; it’s never big, never small. If your friend wishes to be an engineer and you wish to be a writer, there is nothing wrong in it. As far as your ambition is giving you happiness, it’s worth pursuing.

Discuss your ambition with your parents -  At times, students fear to put forward their thoughts in front of their parents. They feel that parents would not understand; our question is why they would not understand? For your good they will do anything, you just need to present your thoughts in the right way. Tell them that it would not be fair if a budding mathematician takes painting brush in his hands, or if a creative artist puts on glasses to solve queries. It will certainly lead to big blunders. We are sure that your parents will understand and welcome your dreams with both arms wide open.

If you have made your mind then stick to your decision - There is a very famous Bollywood song that says, “Kuch to log kahenge, Logon ka kaam hai kehna” (no matter what you do, good or bad, it’s the job of people to comment). So irrespective of whatever people say, if you know that you are doing the right thing then just do it. It’s your life; thus your decision and be responsible for putting in maximum effort. Best of luck and do well.

Vote the Right with the ‘Right to Vote’

Amid all this Lok Sabha election buzz around the town, there was a group of youngsters saying, “Voting is nothing but crap, and the only good thing about it is that it gives us a public holiday.”

Strange and annoying! Isn’t it? If it’s annoying you also, then let’s change it or better, let’s be the change!!!  Voting is the right of every individual in democratic country - India. Each citizen is given the power to vote and select the right candidate for nation. However, it’s very sad to know that many of us are either not aware of this power, or are too lazy and ignorant to exercise it.

Taking the same into account, the faculty of Punjab Technical University decided to enlighten people on why is it important to vote. Thus, herein, we have mentioned top reasons to vote:

Voting is your right: Claiming and practicing your right to vote is a sensible decision that everyone should make. There is no point of having a right that you cannot or do not exercise.

Your vote is your voice: It’s very easy to blame the Government for every wrong deed happening around the country. It’s very easy to say that all our anger is a waste, as no one hears. At the same time, it is also very easy to be heard. If you are angry with the Government or a particular party for that matter, then cast your vote against it and speak your unheard words.

Each vote counts: Everyone feels that his or her individual vote is nothing more than a drop of water in an ocean, but they forget that every drop constitutes to make an ocean. Your single vote matters a lot, it has that power of bringing a change, so just don’t waste it.

A means to contribute to the nation: Voting is one of the best ways through which you can make a contribution towards the betterment of the nation. The Election Day is as important as Independence or Republic Day; the only difference is that we celebrate the latter two because of the contributions made by yesteryear heroes, and in the former, we are the heroes.

The feel good factor: When you vote, you get this ‘feel good feeling’ that you did something to bring a change. Even if your voted candidate doesn’t win, you at least tried, which is more important.

It’s just one day that PTU wants you to give to the nation

We are asking you to give just one day to the country, the rest 364 are only yours. In fact, casting a vote would only require an hour or maximum two, nothing more than that. However, just make sure that you don’t vote just for the sake of voting. Exercise your right for good, for change, for revolution. Vote the right candidate that you feel can make the scenario better. On this 30th April, 2014 (the decided date for Lok Sabha Elections in Punjab), PTU would be looking forward for maximum participation of all Indians, especially the youth. Remember, youth is the future; your one vote can actually make or break the destiny of the nation.

Top Tips To Beat Your Exams Stress

Top Tips To Beat Your Exams Stress

Are your exams round the corner? Are you suffering from sleepless nights? Do you feel confused while opening books? Sorry, but you are caught by exam phobia.

‘Exam Phobia’ is not a new term for anyone of us. Whenever examinations are about to knock our door, instead of greeting them with a smile, we welcome them with a lot of stress. Having a little stress is not bad as it kicks your conscious to give your best, but when it gets out of control, it can ruin things.

At Punjab Technical University (http://www.ptu.ac.in) , we have a family of more than 4 lakh students and thus, we perfectly understand the phenomenon of exam stress or exam phobia. In order to help students in fighting the exam stress, the expert counselors of PTU have provided some advice.

1.      Believe in yourself
Self-confidence is the best stress killer. The more you believe in yourself, the more you have this attitude that ‘it’s just an exam, I can do it’, the farther exam stress remains. However, please note that there is a thin line between confidence and over-confidence, and we believe you are mature enough to distinguish between the two.
2.      Don’t compare
‘Everyone can’t be good at everything, but everyone can be good at something.’ Thus, it is not necessary that if your friend is a master of physics, you also need to be. Everyone is different and is meant to be good in different things. Don’t compare your skills with your mates, until and unless it gives you a boost to perform better. Healthy comparing that gives you motivation to work hard is good, but if comparison gives you depression and leaves you disheartened, there is no point doing it.
3.      Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise
A bit of a change in your lifestyle can bring a lot of change in your performance at the exam center. Creating useless mountains of stress and staying awake till late nights is certainly no solution. Instead, go to bed on time, enjoy comfortable sleeping hours and get up early in the morning. The fresh morning breeze is best medium to refresh you and your mind.
4.      Time management always works
We know that every weekend you make a time-table for yourself, and by the next weekend you forget it. Kindly this time, don’t be so ignorant. While your exams are about to knock your socks off, you need to have a proper schedule for studying. Divide your time equally between the subjects and on the same hand, do keep scope for breaks. Don’t over study, study smart and kick stress out.
5.      Eat healthy and exercise regularly
Healthy eating gives strength to your brain for easy grasping and stamina to your body for enduring long stretched study hours. Further, don’t forget to exercise or play, as it refreshes your mind and body.

On this note, PTU wishes all the students good luck for their exams. May you come up with flying colors!

Character Building: A Step for a Brighter and Better Future

“Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.”
                                                                                                            - John Wooden

‘Character’, well it seems to be just a nine letter word, but with the meaning of a million. It is something that defines the real you; that defines and guides your actions. If you go by the dictionary words, they sum up character as the mental and moral qualities distinctive to an individual. Therefore, if you wish to stand out as an individual you need to give a thought to character building.

What is character building?
In case you have this little question hovering in your mind, allow us to help you. Character building means some really simple and intellectual steps that help in creating and boosting your distinctive personality.

The 4 stairs to Character Building
People generally believe that character is built and enhanced with time and life experiences, but there is more to it than meets the eye. Yes, the life experiences do play a great role in creating an individual’s character, but you need to put some extra efforts to bring things on the right track.
Though no institution can teach you on character building, it can certainly show you the path. The Punjab Technical University believes in crafting professionals by building character, and therefore has brought forward the following points for your assistance:
Set your principles
Being the superior race created by the almighty, we humans understand the basic difference between every right and wrong deed. Still, at times we fail to take the right decision. This happens because we don’t define a set of rules and principles for ourselves. So, the first step says that you need to set your principles, certain morals and ethics. Remember, these principles should not be implied forcefully, but by your happy willingness.
Evaluate yourself on past experiences
Be it good or bad, past experiences always teach you something. You need to recollect the choices you made in the past, and evaluate that how far those decisions stood clear on your principles.
Be the change
The past cannot be changed, but the future can. ‘To err is human’, so don’t regret on any bad decision made in the past. Look forward and make sure not to repeat those mistakes in near future. Bring a change in yourself and stand firm on your self-made morals.
Give a daily check to your decision making power
Right from selecting the color of your attire, to selecting the way to success, every day you make numerous decisions. If you really wish to build a strong character, then stay more conscious while making choices.

You are now aware of what went wrong in the past, so just don’t let that happen again. The final call is always yours; make sure that you make it wisely.

The above stated are very simple steps for character building that can be really helpful for every individual. Punjab Technical University hopes you stay blessed with a strong character and thus enjoy a better and brighter future.
